Peter Farmer

Peter is a highly qualified insurance manager and director with over 40 years’ experience of the UK insurance market, gained with insurers (broker and home service), intermediaries and service providers.

His early career was as a Commercial Underwriter with Royal Insurance before moving into Agency Management. He was keen to experience the insurance industry from a broker’s perspective and worked for several years as Client Development Manager for AA Insurance before returning to United Insurance as their Head of General Insurance.

Having always been committed to and passionate about skills development, he branched out into training and development to become a founding Director of Searchlight Insurance Training Ltd – his broad business acumen was a key component to the successful start-up and future success of this company.

Peter returned to the corporate Insurance world when he joined the highly successful RSA Technical Academy team in 2010. Whilst in role, he was instrumental in overhauling the Global Graduate recruitment and development programme and led the development of several highly successful global training programmes.

Graham Harris

Having spent his whole career in insurance, Graham has an excellent and broad technical pedigree, having managed underwriting and claims units in personal and commercial lines including motor, property and casualty lines in different international markets.

Most recently his roles have been in providing oversight of insurance risk management in the Central and Eastern Europe and Middle East regions of RSA’s Emerging Markets Division and from May 2014 to April 2015 Graham played a central role as a consultant in the Group Corporate Centre’s re-write of standards as part of a strengthening of a governance and risk control framework.

He has also had a broad responsibility for portfolio management, involving principally the provision of regional oversight, challenge and guidance to the local teams looking after whole books of business in both commercial and personal lines. This extended to insurance risk covering the portfolio control environment, the risk management framework, underwriting and claims licences and technical audit.

Graham has also been heavily involved in technical training, running underwriting workshops alongside a programme of portfolio management and insurance risk training.

Helen Hatchek

Helen is an enthusiastic leader with extensive experience in the general insurance industry of which over 25 years has been spent dealing with Casualty insurance from both an underwriting and claims perspective. Her core expertise is in portfolio management, portfolio and case pricing, case underwriting from small companies to large multinationals and policy wordings.

She is a recognised expert in asbestos related issues and their impact on insurers. She has represented RSA and the industry in discussions with government on the compensation culture and asbestos related issues.

In 2011 Helen was appointed Group Insurance Risk Director for RSA where her main responsibilities were the identification and management of global risks from underwriting, pricing, claims, reinsurance and reserving. In this role she has challenged and provided insight to business managers; undertaken extensive stakeholder management at a senior level; and has developed and implemented a global insurance risk management framework.

Helen is passionate about technical and personal development and throughout her career has become an experienced coach and mentor. Alan Chalk

Alan Chalk has over 25 years’ experience in senior management and hands-on roles as an Actuary in the General Insurance field.  He has covered Personal and Commercial Lines as well as the London Market.  Recently Alan has taken time out to complete Masters degrees both in Statistics and in Machine Learning and he now specialises in helping actuarial and analytics teams in insurance companies to build on their core strengths and to embed relevant and powerful statistical and machine learning techniques into their toolkit. Alan has been involved in providing strategic direction to actuarial pricing and reserving functions and in developing the worldwide pricing capability of large insurance companies through direct support and provision of internal training.

David North

David North B.Soc.Sci, MA, PG Diploma in Coaching & Mentoring, MCIPD

David has worked in talent management, leadership development, and organisational change for over 30 years, and has held senior executive positions in the UK and US.  He has particular expertise and interest in coaching and mentoring leaders through career transitions.

David has extensive experience in financial services, working as a training consultant and then Training Manager supporting commercial and personal lines of business. His final corporate role was as Group Learning and Development Manager for RSA Insurance

Since 2005 he has worked as an independent Learning & Development Consultant and Coach.  His international consultancy work focuses on leadership programme design and facilitation for senior executives and high potentials, talent management, learning policy and strategy, change management, and career coaching and mentoring. In these roles he has consulted to clients in the retail, pharmaceutical, brewing, automobile, oil, and professional services sectors.

A selection of David’s recent experience includes:

David led the design and facilitation of an action learning-based development programme for senior leaders within a major insurance company. The programme won the CIPD’s Organisational Learning prize in 2010.

David designed a ‘transition to leadership’ programme for an international financial services business based upon the emotional intelligence model. He has successfully delivered this workshop in the UK, Canada, India, China, South America and the Middle East.

David co-designed and delivered a coaching skills programme for internal HR consultants to support a revised talent management strategy for a US-based international oil company.

Alex Land

Alex joined MAP Training as a Senior Associate in June 2016. She has over 20 years international experience in formulating multinational insurance best practice, developing relevant training programmes on a range of technical insurance subjects and international relationship management. She has worked extensively designing and delivering bespoke training at various levels in different organisations in over 60 countries. This has been through a combination of one on one training to large scale off-site events.

Alex worked as part of RSA’s Global Network Management Team and latterly as Multinational Marine Leader within the Group Underwriting function. Specialisms include set up and management of global insurance networks, multinational insurance programme compliance and implementation best practice, creation and ongoing development of technical training programmes for worldwide delivery and strategic cross-border projects and event management.

Alex is fully bilingual English / Spanish and has strong communication and collaboration skills together with an in-depth understanding of international etiquette and relationship management. She has also worked with international clients dealing with often complex regulatory environments to ensure resolution of technical process issues and has presented at industry events on multinational programmes. Some of Alex’s notable deliveries in recent years include:

  • Designed multinational insurance technical pathway and bespoke training programmes to resolve capability needs (identified via skills benchmarking process). Led delivery of programmes in Scandinavia, Spain, Netherlands, Latin America and UK to over 50 senior insurance professionals.
  • Co-ordination and delivery of regional workshops as part of a tailored worldwide change and training programme for implementation of new multinational insurance IT system used by partners in over 130 countries.
  • Technical expert on multinational insurance compliance. Worked with colleagues to manage challenges following changes in local legislation and ensure continued programme compliance. Presented at AIRMIC Academy, UK and RIMS Canada conference on ‘Challenges of multinational programmes’.

George Maxwell

George Maxwell has specialised in leadership, trading engagement  at a national and regional level and has been involved in the design and delivery of  a variety of trading engagement training programmes in all four insurers where he has worked; RSA, Brit, QBE  and Covéa. He also co-designed and ran an Assessment Centre for RSA sales staff.

George’s career spans over 40 years, and he has held senior management positions in RSA, Brit, and QBE throughout the UK including, Scotland, the North West region, and London; most recently working as a consultant with Covéa where throughout the Northern Region, he was in involved in broker development analysis, introductions, joint calling (including pre- and post-coaching) and training. He has also worked with Covéa senior management in the restructure and interview process within the Northern Region. George has a high profile within the UK regional market and is recognised and respected as a professional who brings passion, knowledge and excellent people skills into play within all aspects of his interaction with the market, all of which helps transform a trading engagement programme into a very realistic experience for participants.
George is an ACII Chartered Insurer, current PR officer and past President of the Insurance and Actuarial Society of Glasgow – where he has recently become involved in their mentoring programme – and in April of 2017 George was awarded The Distinguished Service Medal by the CII.
